Keeping it local
Welcome to Sweetgale Meadworks & Cider House, a craft winery located on Main Street in scenic Homer, Alaska.
In crafting our small-batch meads and cider we have one overarching goal: to showcase the aromas and flavors of Alaska’s fruit, berries and honey, using nothing but locally produced inputs. We work closely with local farmers, foragers and beekeepers to procure the finest ingredients, and there is literally nothing in our meads and ciders from outside Alaska — even the yeasts we use have been selected and cultivated over the years from varieties that occur naturally right here in Homer.
In side-by-side fermentations conducted in 2018, we found that these local yeasts clearly outperformed the best industrially-produced yeasts from France when it came to expressing the purest fruit and berry notes in our meads. In February 2022 our Alpine Blueberry mead won Best of Show, out of 92 entries from 18 states, at the Texas Mead Cup.
Our meads contain nothing but local honey, fruit and water — even the yeasts are local Alaskan varieties. Natural wines like these, made without the addition of sulfites, sorbates or other preservatives used in conventional wines, are living products that should be opened with care as there is always a chance they could develop natural effervescence. We use caps rather than corks on our champagne-rated wine bottes to ensure they are safe for transport and will remain sealed even when stored for long periods of time.
